Also some (all?) of the textures provided with the model are gamma-corrected, so you need to remove the gamma before using them, and then apply gamma on the whole image from the Color mapping settings.

For the glossiness, I'm just using 0.4 without any glossiness map. I'm using the original specular texture for the specular amount.

Yes, you are right that the sub-surface effect was too strong; I've reduced the radius now a bit, see the attachments.
